Three short online courses will each earn a micro-credential towards a Certificate in Teaching Beginner Music by Ear from University of Alberta Continuing Education.
- Creating the Learning Environment
- Experiencing the Learning Environment
- Learning with the Instrument
These courses can be taken in any order.
The courses are not just for teachers – adult music students may use these courses as a self-study program for developing their own best learning practices.
Topics that will be covered:
- Basic principles of aural learning on an instrument
- Experience learning by ear yourself
- How to adapt aural teaching and learning to a wide variety of repertoire, not specific to any one method
- Survey popular teaching methods that use an ear-based approach
- How to use learning by ear to develop music reading skills
- How to direct a beginner ensemble without needing a score
- Other topics that emerge during during class discussion based on individual class participants teaching and learning situations
OPTIONAL:
Participants can choose to register these courses with the Suzuki Association of the Americas as prerequisites to entering the SAA teacher training program (equivalent to Filosofia and/or Every Child Can!)
Elementary general music teachers can also obtain registration for “Learning with the Instrument” as “Introduction to Suzuki Recorder” if they choose to do that course using a recorder as their demonstration instrument.
