Three short online courses will each earn a micro-credential towards a Certificate in Teaching Beginner Music by Ear from University of Alberta Continuing Education.

  • Creating the Learning Environment
  • Experiencing the Learning Environment
  • Learning with the Instrument

These courses can be taken in any order.

The courses are not just for teachers – adult music students may use these courses as a self-study program for developing their own best learning practices.

Topics that will be covered:

  • Basic principles of aural learning on an instrument
  • Experience learning by ear yourself
  • How to adapt aural teaching and learning to a wide variety of repertoire, not specific to any one method
  • Survey popular teaching methods that use an ear-based approach
  • How to use learning by ear to develop music reading skills
  • How to direct a beginner ensemble without needing a score
  • Other topics that emerge during during class discussion based on individual class participants teaching and learning situations

OPTIONAL:

Participants can choose to register these courses with the Suzuki Association of the Americas as prerequisites to entering the SAA teacher training program (equivalent to Filosofia and/or Every Child Can!)

Elementary general music teachers can also obtain registration for “Learning with the Instrument” as “Introduction to Suzuki Recorder” if they choose to do that course using a recorder as their demonstration instrument.
